LAKE CHARLES – Louisiana Swashbucklers head coach Darnell Lee has shown he has an eye for talent. Lee is 31-1 his previous two seasons at the helm of the local indoor football team that has won back-to-back championships. That eye will focus on putting the pieces together for a run at the Southern Indoor Football League title, which kicks off its inaugural season in mid April.
The team held an open tryout on December 13th in Cowboy stadium on the campus of McNeese State University, leaving Lee impressed with the turnout and some of the skill that attended. “Even with the cold weather and the high school championships going on out of town, we had decent numbers”, commented Lee. “I think we may have found a couple diamonds in the rough like we did last year with Alvin Bartie and Brandon Thomas”. Bartie was the Bucs quarterback and leagues Most Valuable Offensive Player last season, while Thomas was a regular starter at defensive back until a mid season injury limited his time.
Lee’s next opportunity to start filling roster slots will come during a closed tryout on January 10th in Lake Charles. The team will at that time to invite back select players from the December tryout for a second look, as well as get their first look at talent recruited during the offseason.
“Due to a few of the rule changes entering the new league, fans will see some different faces and a slight change in style of play. But our commitment to the fans and community continues to be a strong team that competes for a championship year after year.”
