Albany, NY (Sept. 23, 2008) - With the first pick of the 23rd Annual Continental Basketball Association College Draft, the Albany Patroons selected guard Michael Jenkins (6-3, 195) from Winthrop University.
Jenkins was a senior last season for Winthrop and led the Eagles to their fourth straight conference title. Jenkins was named the 2008 Big South Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring 33 points to return the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament. "This is a kid who has had great success but is under the radar," said new Patroons Head Coach Derrick Rowland. "He is an all-around player who does many things well. We will be looking to bring him in and make him a part of the rotation. I think we got a great player today with this pick." Jenkins was excited about being tabbed the No. 1 overall pick and hopes to continue his collegiate success onto the professional level. "I would first like to thank the people of Albany and the Albany organization for thinking so highly of me and my abilities," said Jenkins. "This was something that I hoped would happen and to be selected first overall is an honor. I look forward to coming to Albany and being apart of the tradition and legacy of the Patroons. I can't wait to get started and bring a championship back to Albany." The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 13.9 points per game for the 07-08 Eagles while leading them to a 23-10 record. Jenkins was a two-time member of the All-Big South Conference Tournament team and led the Eagles in 3-point percentage in 2006-07. This is the second time the Patroons have had the first selection in the CBA Draft. In 2005, the Patroons selected T.J. Thompson from George Washington. Thompson went on to be selected to the CBA All-Rookie team and was the runner-up to Roger Powell in the Rookie of the Year balloting. - FOLLOWING ARE ROUND-BY-ROUND AND TEAM-BY-TEAM RESULTS - 2008 CBA DRAFT Round-by-Round FIRST ROUND 1.
